What is an X2 capacitor and where is it used?

An X2 capacitor is a film capacitor rated for connection across the AC mains line (line-to-line). It is classified as a Class X2 interference-suppression capacitor under IEC 60384-14 and must survive mains transients without risk of fire or electric shock. X2 capacitors are used in EMC input filters of power supplies, motor drives and appliances to suppress differential-mode conducted noise. What is a gas discharge tube (GDT) and how does it protect circuits?

A gas discharge tube (GDT) is a surge protection device consisting of two or three electrodes sealed in a ceramic or glass envelope filled with an inert gas mixture. When a voltage surge exceeds the GDT’s sparkover voltage, the gas ionizes and conducts, clamping the transient and diverting surge current away from the protected circuit. GDTs offer very low standby capacitance and leakage, making them ideal for protecting telecom lines, data ports and AC power circuits. OKAYA manufactures a broad range of two- and three-electrode GDTs for telecom, industrial and power applications.
